- [Dr. Mark Silk](https://bchsjs.org/dr-mark-silk/): Dr. Mark Silk joined BCHSJS this year. He received a B.A from Columbia University in Music while simultaneously receiving a BHL in Jewish History from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He received an MA in Contemporary Jewish Studies from Brandeis University and an Ed.D in Curriculum and Instruction from SUNY Albany. He has presented workshops at regional and national conferences on mentoring, professional development and organizational change. He was principal of SSDS of Essex and Union (now Golda Och Academy) as well as of The Reuben Gittelman Hebrew Day School. He served as the Director of Professional and Leadership Development for the JEA of MetroWest and was the Director of the Jewish New Teacher Project. Presently he is teaching in the Educational Leadership doctoral program at Saint Peter's University. Mark has three married daughters.

We meet on Sundays from 9:30am to 12:45pm, which doesn’t interfere with most extracurricular activities or jobs and leaves the afternoon free. We have a great location, Temple Israel in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

- [Young Leadership Course](https://bchsjs.org/youth-leadership-course/): The Young Leadership course is a Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey funded program taught at BCHSJS. The course offers Jewish high school sophomores and juniors the opportunity to establish relationships with Israeli students via Skype and participate in educational discussions. BCHSJS students discover what it would be like to live in Israel, just as the Israeli students get a glimpse of life in America. They also have the opportunity to meet prominent Israeli and American leaders and engage in discussions on real world issues and challenges. There is a focus on developing leadership skills throughout the class, and each graduate earns a Leadership Certificate at the end of the year. BCHSJS students host their Israeli counterparts when they visit the U.S. for an educational, social and cultural exchange. Highlights include visiting iconic New York City sites, participating in “real world” seminars and simply relaxing with each other.

- [COVID 19 Protocols for in- person learners](https://bchsjs.org/shabbatonim/): In Person Attendance during COVID policy: As a community BCHSJS pulls from 18 different High Schools. Some schools are closing because of COVID cases. If you have been asked by your school or the department of health to be in quarantine for two weeks because of a possibly first degree exposure to COVID, you may not be in attendance and will need to sign in virtually to your in person classes. You may return after 14 days. If you or someone in your home have tested positive for COVID you may not return to BCHSJS without a doctor’s note. If you or someone in your home has traveled to a state requiring a two week quarantine after returning to New Jersey, you will take your classes virtually. In any case, please notify us as soon as possible. BCHSJS will move virtually for two weeks if anyone in our community tests positive

- [BCHSJS Experience](https://bchsjs.org/bchsjs-experience-2/): BCHSJS is a safe, tight-knit community where they can be themselves, meet other Jewish teens, and talk about their experiences with other teens who are also in public school settings. Our school attracts Jewish teenagers from throughout the region, giving them the chance to make friendships with others they likely wouldn’t meet. Our alumni tell us that when a fellow BCHSJS student is at the same college or university, even if they hadn’t been close friends, a strong bond exists between them.
- [Tikkun Olam](https://bchsjs.org/tikkun-olam/): BCHSJS brings our values of making a difference in the world to life for our students. Whether it’s collecting food for the needy or working on a holiday gift drive, we offer a variety of ways for students to give back and to fulfill community service obligations for their secular high schools. One notable program is our Jewish Volunteer Corp. This year-long service-learning class provides the opportunity to volunteer with a group of senior citizens. Approximately one-third of the class sessions take place (transportation provided) at the Daughters of Miriam/The Gallen Institute senior care facility in Clifton. There, students build relationships with residents and learn their life histories.

And yet, this is the most important time to guide our youth into becoming adults with a strong Jewish affiliation and identity. As thousands of our alumni and their parents can attest, BCHSJS has been a catalyst for making that happen. It prevents the B’nai Mitzvah from being the endpoint of Jewish education and ushers teens into the next phase of becoming compassionate, committed Jews. Our community of teens graduate with a strong sense of what it means to be Jewish and with a deeper connection to Israel that supports them on the college campus and beyond.

For more than 40 years, we have been giving local teens the tools to form a Jewish identity that carries them into adulthood and stays with them for life.
